US SEC Launches New Unit To Protect Investors From Crypto And AI Fraud
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) created a new unit called the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU) to address misconduct in the crypto and artificial intelligence sectors. This unit replaces the former Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit and will have around 30 attorneys and fraud experts. The CETU will focus on misconduct involving AI, social media, the dark web, hacking, and crypto assets, aiming to protect investors and promote market efficiency. This development follows the SEC's earlier creation of a crypto task force in January 2025, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, which seeks to develop a regulatory framework for crypto assets. Both the CETU and the task force represent the SEC's efforts to regulate these emerging technologies.
