Pump.fun Raises $1.3B, Buys Back PUMP Worth $2.3M

The meme coin platform Pump.fun, operating on the Solana blockchain, conducted a buyback of its PUMP token worth $2.3 million, which triggered a 1315% price increase to $0.00656. This buyback follows a token sale where Pump.fun raised $1.32 billion by selling 33% of the PUMP token supply at $0.004 per token, valuing the token at $5.97 billion. The buyback was funded using fees collected from the platform and acquired over 3 billion tokens. Despite the price surge caused by the buyback, concerns remain regarding the long-term utility of the PUMP token, as it lacks governance rights, revenue-sharing, or direct functionality within the Pump.fun platform. Critics suggest the buyback may be a marketing tactic to maintain attention amidst declining platform activity. Other crypto projects are also employing similar buyback strategies. PUMP is currently trading at $2.11 billion market cap, although it is 4% down for the past week.
