Did the US Government Sell 85% Of Its Bitcoin Holdings?
Recent documents indicate the US government directly owns only 28,988 bitcoins, valued at $3.47 billion. This is only 15% of the 200,000 BTC that was previously believed to be under US control. The remaining 85% of bitcoin is held as seized assets, rather than forfeited assets. This means that a large portion of the total bitcoin amount could be returned to victims of hacks or other crimes, such as the Bitfinex hack, and is not available for the government to freely sell. This has raised concerns in the crypto community regarding the actual size and availability of the US government's bitcoin holdings, which could impact strategic plans regarding a US Bitcoin Reserve.
