Thailand Plans Crypto Sandbox Allowing Tourists to Convert Crypto into Local Currency
Thailand is developing a crypto sandbox that will allow tourists to convert cryptocurrencies into Thai baht for spending within the country. This initiative, led by the Thai SEC and the Bank of Thailand, expands on a previous pilot program in Phuket and aims to increase crypto adoption in the tourism sector. Foreign visitors will be able to exchange their crypto through licensed operators and then use the baht via regulated electronic platforms like QR code payments. Licensed digital asset exchanges, brokers, and dealers will be eligible to participate in the sandbox for up to 18 months, with potential extensions, provided they meet specific eligibility and compliance requirements, including anti-money laundering measures and spending caps for tourists. The Tourism Council of Thailand has expressed concerns about the readiness of the ecosystem and the need for clear regulatory frameworks to prevent illicit activities. Other countries, such as Bhutan, are also exploring crypto payment options for tourists, partnering with companies like Binance Pay to enable payments for various tourism-related expenses.
