Trusted UK Agent Caught Stealing Over 50 BTC from Seized Funds
Paul Chowles, a former officer with the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), was convicted of stealing over 50 Bitcoin that had been seized during the Silk Road 2.0 investigation. Chowles had been involved in data recovery and analysis from devices confiscated from Thomas White, a co-founder of the dark web marketplace. In 2017, the NCA discovered the Bitcoin missing. The investigation revealed Chowles had transferred the stolen Bitcoin to a wallet linked to his mobile phone, used a crypto mixer to anonymize the transactions, and later liquidated some of the funds using crypto debit cards and exchanges. He pleaded guilty to theft and related charges and received a 5.5-year prison sentence. Asset confiscation proceedings are underway to recover the stolen funds, estimated to be worth $821,345 at the time of the theft, with $146,580 spent using crypto debit cards.
