Former NCA officer bags 5-year sentence for stealing Silk Road BTC

Paul Chowles, a former officer with the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for stealing 50 Bitcoin, currently valued at approximately $4.4 million. The Bitcoin was seized during investigations into the Silk Road dark web marketplace in 2013 and Silk Road 2.0 in 2014. Chowles, who was responsible for analyzing crypto from devices seized from Silk Road 2.0 operator Thomas White, transferred the Bitcoin from White's retirement wallet to another address in May 2017. He then used Bitcoin Fog, a mixing service, to obscure the origin of the funds, converted some of the Bitcoin into pounds, and spent it using Cryptopay and Wirex debit cards. Investigations revealed that Chowles profited £613,147.29 from his actions. Thomas White helped to uncover the theft, noting that only someone inside the NCA with access to his private keys could have stolen the coins, leading to Chowles's arrest and subsequent conviction for theft and money laundering.
