Jack Dorsey commits $10 million to open-source social media after leaving Bluesky
Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has committed $10 million to open-source social media projects. This investment is channeled through 'and Other Stuff,' an online group formed in May with other tech experts to explore alternative social media protocols beyond traditional platforms. The group is experimenting with technologies like Nostr, ActivityPub, and Cashu, aiming to build social applications with AI assistance and focusing on user rights. Dorsey believes Twitter's structure as a company, influenced by advertising and corporate incentives, was a mistake and seeks to create a more open, user-centric model. 'and Other Stuff' is developing a social media Bill of Rights addressing privacy, security, interoperability, and transparency. The initial investment has already spurred the creation of a new non-profit working on iOS apps.
